Pustertaler Museum

There are over 800 castles and palaces in South Tyrol alone. There are also numerous museums. There are twelve in Bolzano alone (see here). Among them is the world-famous "Ötzi" museum, which preserves the 5300-year-old glacier mummy of the Iceman. On a rainy day, this can be ideally combined with a visit to the regional capital and perhaps even the Messner Mountain Museum in Firmian Castle. Speaking of Reinhold Messner and his museums. There are also museums in Bruneck. A very small one in the middle of Bruneck, which is dedicated to Pustertal mountaineers. Then of course the MMM Corones on the summit of Kronplatz and the MMM Ripa in Bruneck Castle. (Opening times and admission prices can be found via the links.)

In St. Lorenzen, near Bruneck, is the Mansio Sebatum archaeological museum, which deals with how the Romans came to move from their warm climes to the inhospitable mountain world of the Alps.

There are around 30 museums in the Pustertal (they are all listed here). Two can be visited in Sand in Taufers, the main town in the Ahrntal, and in Luttach in the Ahrntal. In Luttach, in the Nativity Scene Museum, the operators go to great lengths to skilfully present the theme of nativity scenes. And at the Taufers Castle in Sand, there are always interesting exhibitions and, of course, the castle itself can be visited. The old "blood channel" is often admired there.
